Dr Catherine Owen and Prof Adam Hanieh teach in China
As Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University, Dr Catherine Owen (Senior Lecturer in International Relations) co-taught with Prof Adam Hanieh (of Exeter's Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies) on the Institute of International and Area Studies doctoral programme. This programme is one of China's leading Area Studies programmes and trains students in interdisciplinary, ethnographic-oriented study of the politics, economies and societies of developing countries. Catherine also supported the Institute's junior scholars in their engagement with anglophone academia and helped to build bridges between Area Studies communities in Europe and China, with a particular focus on Eurasia Studies.

With their Historical Archaeology, Heritage and Identity Research Partnership with The University of Jaffna in Sri Lanka, Prof Gillian Juleff (Associate Professor of Archaelogy) and Dr Deborah McFarlane (Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations) repurpose the practices of archaeology and heritage by addressing issues of identity, belonging and place that will contribute to peace-building and sustainable future communities. Historical and contemporary archaeology are relatively new sub-disciplines that have gained traction internationally because they intersect with research relevant to a range of social sciences. Their focus on the last 500 years explores the everyday archaeology of coastal communities, drawing on oral traditions and living memory alongside natural and built environments. This collaboration also includes the Universities of Leicester and Colombo, and Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA).

Grounded within the University's strategic vision, which perceives education as a catalyst for fostering a socially just future, Dr Aneta Brockhill (Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations) is working on developing a 'global solidarity curriculum'. This initiative is firmly rooted in the principles of pedagogy of solidarity, decolonizing education, and critical pedagogies of compassion. The envisioned classroom serves as a dynamic space for decolonial learning, action-oriented engagement, and transnational solidarity.
